EDITORS COMMENTS
King George V and Queen Mary at Craigwell House, Aldwick, near Bognor Regis, c1930s (1936) In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1930s as we witness a rare moment of intimacy between King George V and Queen Mary. The royal couple is captured in front of their beloved residence, Craigwell House, located in the picturesque town of Aldwick. Dressed impeccably in their signature regal attire - King George donning a distinguished coat and hat while Queen Mary exudes elegance in her exquisite dress - they radiate an air of grace and dignity. Their presence commands attention as they stand side by side amidst the lush greenery of their garden. The photograph not only showcases the monarch's love for automobiles but also highlights his progressive nature. Known for his significant contributions during his reign from 1910 to 1936, King George V introduced groundbreaking concepts such as appointing Britain's first Labour Prime Minister and broadcasting a Christmas message to the nation. Tragically, this image serves as a poignant reminder that shortly after its capture in 1936, King George V succumbed to influenza. His eldest son Edward would succeed him on the throne. This black-and-white print captures an era defined by tradition yet marked by progress. It immortalizes two individuals who played pivotal roles within British history – King George V and Queen Mary.
