Krisravitsa, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Krisravitsa, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Krisravitsa, c1910–1913" and captured by the talented artist Herbert Ponting in 1913, takes us back to a significant moment in history. It portrays the final expedition of the renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Captain Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists. Their mission was twofold: to continue scientific research initiated during Scott's previous voyage to Antarctica and to be the first humans to reach the South Pole. Tragically though valiantly persevering through harsh conditions and dwindling supplies due to unforeseen blizzards that delayed their progress significantly; they finally reached their destination on January 17th, 1912. However, their triumph quickly turned into heartbreak as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already achieved this feat a month earlier. Despite their devastating setback and knowing that survival was unlikely given their circumstances; Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - pressed forward until March when they tragically succumbed. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found along with poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle against nature's unforgiving forces. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. Through this image frozen in time we are reminded of these brave explorers' unwavering determination and sacrifice for scientific advancement amidst one of Earth's most extreme environments.
