EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Lady & Servant, 1870s" takes us back to the elegant world of 19th-century Japan. The unknown creator skillfully captures a moment between an employer and her servant, showcasing the stark contrast in their social class. The lady stands tall in her traditional kimono, exuding grace and poise. Her intricate clothing reflects the rich heritage of Japanese culture, while her platform shoes known as geta add height and sophistication to her stature. Hand-colored details bring life to this monochromatic image, enhancing its visual appeal. In contrast, the servant humbly stands by her side wearing a simpler attire that symbolizes her lower status. Her occupation is evident through the practical patten shoes she wears for work purposes. This portrait not only showcases fashion but also highlights the dynamics of power and hierarchy within society during that era. Preserved at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this albumen silver print from a glass negative with applied color serves as a window into history. It allows us to appreciate both the artistry behind early photography techniques and gain insight into the lives of women in 19th-century Japan. As we gaze upon this enigmatic photograph captured by an unknown artist, we are reminded of how images can transcend time and connect us with our past.
