The Leader of the Expedition in Winter Garb, c1908, (1909)

The Leader of the Expedition in Winter Garb, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) in a jumper. Shackleton made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic leader of an expedition, Ernest Shackleton, dressed in his winter garb. Taken around 1908 during his second Antarctic expedition, Shackleton's determination and resilience shine through as he poses confidently in a thick jumper. Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who made significant contributions to polar exploration. During this particular expedition from 1907-1909, he achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S. This incredible milestone brought him within a mere 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole – the largest advancement ever made towards it at that time. Not only did Shackleton lead his team to this historic achievement, but they also conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. These accomplishments earned him knighthood from King Edward VII for his exceptional bravery and leadership. Tragically, Ernest Shackleton met his untimely demise during his third and final oceanographic and sub-Antarctic expedition when he was just 47 years old. However, his legacy lives on as an inspiration to future explorers and adventurers alike. This illustration is taken from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton himself – a testament to both his courage on these expeditions and his talent as a writer documenting their experiences. It serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of discovery in even the harshest environments on Earth.
