EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Men for the Fleet!, 1859" captures a significant moment in history. In May 1959, Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, was appointed aboard HMS Euryalus at the tender age of 15. This cartoon-like depiction portrays him as a child despite his young adulthood during this time. From Punch, or the London Charivari on May 14th, 1859, this artwork showcases the political and recruiting aspects of naval life. Dressed in a sailor suit with an epaulette-adorned uniform and cocked hat, Prince Alfred embodies both royalty and military service. The image reflects the concept of recruitment and highlights the importance of men joining the fleet during that era. It provides insight into how children were involved in naval warfare as sailors from an early age. This black-and-white engraving carries historical significance as it represents transportation by water during the 19th century. The presence of ships symbolizes war and soldiers while emphasizing Prince Alfred's role within the navy. As part of Britain's heritage image partnership collection, this print serves as a reminder of Prince Alfred's journey from boyhood to becoming Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. It immortalizes his contribution to naval warfare and his subsequent title as Duke of Edinburgh.
