Loves Game of Chess - Neptune strikes a rock, 1937
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an enchanting print captured by Emile-Aurele Van Moe. This artwork, featured in Verve - Vol. 1, No. 1 in December 1937, transports us to a mythical world where the realms of love and chess collide. In this exterior scene set against a backdrop of vibrant blues, we witness the convergence of various elements: animals, both real and fantastical; men and women engaged in play; and the presence of music intertwined with religious symbolism. A mermaid-like figure gracefully poses alongside a man playing a wind instrument while Neptune himself strikes a monumental rock with his mighty trident. Van Moe's composition evokes a sense of wonder as it combines elements from mythology, religion, and art history into one harmonious tableau. The grey tones contrast beautifully with splashes of color throughout the image. This portrait captures the essence of early 20th-century artistic expression through its exploration of themes such as power dynamics between gods and mortals or even humans' eternal struggle for love and victory on life's grand chessboard. As we gaze upon this print from Heritage Images' collection curated by The Print Collector29, we are transported to another time—a moment frozen in history that continues to captivate our imagination today.
