It is necessary to suffer to be beautiful

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating 19th-century print that encapsulates the concept of beauty through pain. Created by artist EA Tilly, this artwork was featured in La Gazette du Bon Ton and later published in La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles. The print portrays an elegant French woman seated before a mirror, her long hair being meticulously plaited and pulled. The intricate process of styling her hair is depicted with great detail, emphasizing the lengths women would go to achieve societal standards of beauty during that era. Intriguingly, the woman stands on stilts while undergoing this painful procedure, symbolizing the sacrifices made for fashion's sake. This satirical element adds depth to the artwork as it comments on society's obsession with appearance and its impact on individuals' well-being. The vibrant colors used in this engraving bring life to every aspect of the scene – from the elaborate dress and costume worn by the lady to her surroundings. It transports us back to 1882-1884 France, offering a glimpse into both fashion trends and social norms prevalent at that time. This remarkable piece serves as a reminder of how ideals of beauty have evolved over centuries while shedding light on enduring themes such as sacrifice, vanity, and self-expression. As we admire "It is necessary to suffer to be beautiful" we are compelled to reflect upon our own perceptions of beauty and question whether it truly requires suffering or if there exists another path towards embracing one
