The New Learning, c1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports us back to the 15th century, specifically to Greenwich in 1499. In this remarkable artwork by Frank Cadogan Cowper, we witness an extraordinary encounter between two intellectual giants of their time: Erasmus and Thomas More. As they visit the children of Henry VII, including the young boy at the center who would grow up to become King Henry VIII, we are reminded of the profound impact these scholars had on shaping history. The painting was originally commissioned as part of a mural for the Houses of Parliament in London in 1910. It beautifully captures a moment filled with curiosity and anticipation as Erasmus and More engage with their young audience. The attention to detail is exquisite - from the fur-trimmed garments worn by English nobility to the presence of a mischievous monkey perched on one character's shoulder. This image not only celebrates learning and education but also highlights England's rich literary heritage. The figures depicted here symbolize different aspects of knowledge and wisdom, making it evident that this gathering represents more than just a casual visit. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, teaching played an essential role in society. As we gaze upon this print from Art History and Literature Illustrations by Jessie Noakes, we can't help but be transported into another world - one where great minds come together to inspire future generations.
