EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Pena Palace, located in Sintra, Portugal during the 20th century. The palace's history is as intriguing as its stunning architecture. Originally built on the ruins of a monastery devastated by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, King Ferdinand II of Portugal acquired the site in 1838 with a vision to create a magnificent summer residence. To bring his dream to life, King Ferdinand commissioned Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege, a German mining engineer and amateur architect. Together they designed an enchanting Romantic style palace that would become one of Portugal's most iconic landmarks. The construction of Pena Palace took place between 1842 and 1854, resulting in this extraordinary masterpiece that stands proudly amidst lush greenery and rolling hills. Its grandeur is accentuated by intricate details such as towers and steps leading up to its entrance. In this monochrome image captured by an unknown creator from Heritage Images collection, we are transported back to witness the splendor of this royal abode during its heyday. It serves as a testament to both King Ferdinand II's visionary taste and Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege's architectural prowess.
