EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a pitcher created by American artist Louis Annino in the mid-20th century, around 1936. The pitcher, adorned with intricate ornamentation, is a stunning representation of the artistic sensibilities of the 1930s and 1940s in the United States. Annino's masterful use of color and contrast is evident in the pitcher's white ceramic body, which is accentuated by the vibrant depiction of wheat sheaves in rich browns and yellows. The pitcher's design is a harmonious blend of traditional and modern elements, with the pitcher's simple, elegant shape contrasting with the intricate, detailed ornamentation that covers its surface. The pitcher's ornamentation is a visual feast, with wheat sheaves and other organic forms rendered in exquisite detail through a combination of watercolor and graphite on paperboard. The use of these mediums adds a sense of depth and texture to the image, making it a true standout in the realm of 20th-century ceramics. This beautiful piece of art is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. It is a reminder of a time when artists like Louis Annino were pushing the boundaries of their mediums and creating works that continue to inspire and captivate audiences today. The pitcher is currently housed in the prestigious National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where it is a cherished addition to the Index of American Design. This collection, which is dedicated to preserving and showcasing American art from the colonial period to the present day, is a fitting home for this remarkable piece of American art history.
