EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Plan of the City of Rome. Part 11 with the San Pancrazio (left bank), 1645" takes us back to the vibrant Baroque era in Italy. Created by Antonio Tempesta in the 17th century, this aerial view showcases the grandeur and architectural marvels of Rome. The etching depicts a sprawling cityscape, with intricate details meticulously engraved onto paper. The focus lies on San Pancrazio, a magnificent church located on the left bank of Rome. Its towering roof stands out against the surrounding buildings, symbolizing Christianity's prominence during that time. As our eyes wander across this elevated view, we are transported to a different era where religion played an integral role in shaping society. Giovanni Domenico de Rossi skillfully collaborated with Tempesta to bring this masterpiece to life through their artistic vision. Now housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this print serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to Italy's rich cultural heritage. It offers viewers an opportunity to explore not only Rome's physical layout but also its spiritual significance within Italian history. With its monochromatic palette and precise detailing, this print captures the essence of urban life in Southern Europe during one of its most influential periods - an enduring reminder of how art can transcend time and transport us into another world.
