EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Portrait of Antinous" from the mid-2nd century. Antinous, a young Bithynian boy, held a special place in the heart of Roman Emperor Hadrian during his reign from 76 to 138 AD. Tragically, Antinous met his untimely demise by drowning in the Nile River. In honor of their deep bond, Hadrian established the city of Antinopolis at the site where he lost his beloved companion. Hadrian's grief and admiration for Antinous led him to commission numerous statues depicting this cherished youth throughout his rule. The sculpture captured in this photograph is housed within The Hermitage collection in St Petersburg, Russia. The image portrays an exquisitely carved marble bust that beautifully captures every detail of Antinous' face and physique. With wings gracefully adorning his head and shoulders, this winged figure symbolizes both divine beauty and eternal youth. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are transported back to ancient Rome—a time when art was used as a powerful medium to immortalize loved ones and commemorate significant events. This portrait serves as a testament to the enduring love between Hadrian and Antinous while showcasing the exceptional talent of classical Roman sculptors
