EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, painted by Alfred Jacob Miller in 1833, showcases Colonel Alexander Smith in his full military regalia. Smith served in the Morgan Volunteers, a distinguished Baltimore-based company of the organized militia of Maryland during the 1830s. The Morgan Volunteers were a specialized unit, uniquely armed with rifles supplied by the state armorer at Annapolis. Colonel Smith's direct gaze and confident posture exude a sense of authority and leadership. He wears an elegant brocade uniform, adorned with intricate gold epaulettes and sideboards. The rich fabric of his clothing, with its vibrant colors and intricate textures, adds to the overall grandeur of the portrait. Smith's sideburns and well-groomed facial hair, along with his polished boots and gloves, further emphasize his impeccable military presentation. The portrait also highlights the significance of the sword, a symbol of power and rank in the military. Smith holds the sword with a firm grip, his hand resting on the hilt, ready for action. The painting's background is simple, allowing the viewer's focus to remain on the colonel and his uniform. This oil on canvas portrait, now housed at the Walters Art Museum, offers a glimpse into the heritage and history of America during the 19th century. It captures the essence of a man who served his country with honor and pride, and stands as a testament to the rich tradition of military art and portraiture.
