EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Francesco de' Medici (1614-1634) in the prime of his youth, painted by the Flemish artist Justus Sustana (Giusto Sustermans) around the year of Francesco's death. The Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco was the last scion of the powerful Medici dynasty to rule Florence. Sustermans, who spent most of his career in Italy, captures the young nobleman's regal presence and refined elegance in this oil on canvas masterpiece. Francesco's attire reflects the Baroque period's opulence and grandeur. He wears an ornate doublet, decorated with gold lace and embroidery, and a sumptuous velvet cape, fastened with a large, ornate brooch. His dark, curly hair is styled in the latest fashion, and his piercing gaze engages the viewer, conveying a sense of strength and determination. The portrait's rich colors and intricate details are a testament to Sustermans' exceptional skill as a painter. The artist masterfully captures the play of light and shadow on Francesco's face, creating a sense of depth and dimension. The background, a dark, textured fabric, serves as an elegant backdrop, drawing the viewer's focus to the subject. This portrait of Francesco de' Medici, now housed in the Muzeum Narodowe in Krakow, Poland, is a prime example of Flemish painting at its finest. It offers a glimpse into the world of the aristocracy during the Baroque period, and serves as a reminder of the power and influence of the Medici family in Florence and Tuscany.
