EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned photographer Dorothea Lange in 1939, captures the haunting remnants of the Mumby Lumber Mill in Malone, Grays Harbor County, Washington. The mill had ceased operations a year prior after thirty-five years of service to the community. Now standing as a solemn testament to the economic hardships faced during the Great Depression, it is being dismantled piece by piece. Lange's lens skillfully portrays the desolation and decay that has befallen this once-thriving industrial site. The image showcases an expansive lumberyard surrounded by rustic wooden structures that have weathered countless storms over time. A serene mill pond reflects both past prosperity and present poverty. The composition evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era when industry thrived in rural America. It serves as a reminder of how economic recessions can devastate entire communities, leaving behind only fragments of their former glory. Dorothea Lange's powerful photography not only captured moments frozen in time but also shed light on social issues plaguing American society during her time. This particular print from her collection held at the Library of Congress is an invaluable historical artifact that continues to resonate with viewers today.
