The Royal Yacht passing the Drachenfels, 1845. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
The Royal Yacht passing the Drachenfels, 1845. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert travel down the River Rhine during a royal visit to Germany. The group of hills called the Seven Mountains, in reality, are more than seven in number, and form a grand commencement to the beautiful scenery of the Rhine; they are the highest and wildest hills on its banks.... The Drachenfels - Dragons Rock - was formed by rising magma that could not break through to the surface, and then cooled and became solid underneath. On the summit is a ruined castle. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

The Royal Yacht passing the Drachenfels, 1845
EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a moment of regal elegance and natural beauty. In this print by Ebenezer Landells, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert can be seen gracefully sailing down the River Rhine during their royal visit to Germany. The scene is set against the backdrop of the magnificent Seven Mountains, which serve as a majestic introduction to the scenic wonders of the Rhine. The focal point of this image is undoubtedly the imposing Drachenfels, or Dragons Rock. This geological marvel was formed when magma rose but failed to reach the surface, solidifying beneath and creating an awe-inspiring hill crowned with a ruined castle on its summit. As steamboats sail past in salute, cannons fire in honor of Her Majesty's presence. Landells' engraving skillfully captures not only the grandeur of nature but also showcases Britain's naval prowess through intricate details such as flags fluttering proudly from masts and cannons firing in unison. The print transports viewers back to a time when steamships were at their zenith and water transport played a vital role in international diplomacy. This historical artifact from "Illustrated London News" offers us a glimpse into Victorian-era travel and exploration while reminding us of both man's ingenuity in harnessing steam power for transportation and nature's enduring ability to create breathtaking landscapes like that found along Germany's beloved River Rhine.
