Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 1894. Creator: Unknown
Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 1894. View of the castle with the Clement memorial obelisk, erected in 1873, to the memory of surgeon and politician William James Clement. The Norman castle was founded by Roger de Montgomery in c1070. Much of it was demolished during the rebuilding and strengthening of the castle by Edward I in c1300, when an outer bailey was also added. It was never used as a fortress after this date, and over the centuries was allowed to fall into disrepair. Elizabeth I gave the castle to the bailiffs and burgesses of Shrewsbury in 1586, and little was done to the building until the Civil War, when further alterations were made. It was captured by the Parliamentarians in 1645, and it was not until 1660, when Charles II was restored to the throne, that it was returned to the ownership of the crown. Shrewsbury Castle - A Glimpse into History
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1894, offering a mesmerizing view of Shrewsbury Castle in Shropshire. The castle, founded by Roger de Montgomery in 1070, stands proudly with its Norman architecture as a testament to centuries gone by. In the foreground of this image, we see the Clement memorial obelisk erected in 1873. This monument pays homage to William James Clement, a renowned surgeon and politician who left an indelible mark on Shrewsbury's history. Over time, much of the castle was demolished during Edward I's rebuilding efforts around 1300. However, it ceased functioning as a fortress after these renovations and gradually fell into disrepair. It wasn't until Elizabeth I gifted the castle to the bailiffs and burgesses of Shrewsbury in 1586 that any significant changes were made. The Civil War brought further alterations to this historic site when it was captured by Parliamentarians in 1645. Only after Charles II's restoration to power in 1660 did ownership return to the crown. Today, visitors can explore this enchanting tourist attraction which showcases both architectural beauty and rich heritage. As we gaze upon this monochrome snapshot from Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes published by The Werner Company of Chicago in 1894, we are transported back through time – witnessing not only a magnificent structure but also glimpses into England's past.
