The Smyrna and Aïdin Railway, 1858. Creator: Unknown

The Smyrna and Aidin Railway, 1858. This railway being the first and only undertaking of the kind in the Ottoman Empire derives from that circumstance alone an interest of more than ordinary significance...it will open a rich district to the south-east of Smyrna, and will connect the town of Aidin with that port by a line of upwards of seventy miles in length. Some idea may be formed of the enormous amount of traffic from the fact that during the busy months more than 5000 camels arrive daily at Smyrna, laden with the various products of the district through which this line passes, and which will, of course, be imported by the new mode of conveyance...The line is just completed to the village of Sedikoi, ten miles from Smyrna. The Illustration is taken from the old Boudjah road. In the valley below is seen the River Meles...The hill on the left is the foot of Mount Pegus; in the middle distance is the Caravan-bridge Hotel, and where will be the first station of the railway; beyond is seen the inner bay of Smyrna, with its blue waters, on which the spirit of innovation constantly glides in the form of a twopenny steamer, of unmistakable Thames build, for the convenience of the opposite village of Bornabat. The distant mountain is Sypilus...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the old Boudjah road, showcases the Smyrna and Aidin Railway, the first and only railway in the Ottoman Empire, completed in 1858. The railway's historical significance lies not only in its novelty but also in its potential to open up a rich and vast district to the south-east of Smyrna, connecting the town of Aidin with the port through a line of approximately seventy miles. The image offers a glimpse into the bustling activity of the region, with more than 5000 camels arriving daily at Smyrna, laden with the diverse products of the district. These goods will soon be transported via the new railway, revolutionizing the mode of conveyance. The photograph depicts the railway line as it stands, completed up to the village of Sedikoi, just ten miles from Smyrna. In the valley below, the River Meles winds its way through the landscape, while the hill on the left marks the foot of Mount Pegus. The middle distance reveals the Caravan-bridge Hotel, which will serve as the first railway station. In the distance, the blue waters of the inner bay of Smyrna shimmer, with the spirit of innovation taking the form of a two-penny steamer, reminiscent of Thames build, ferrying passengers between the opposite village of Bornabat. The distant mountain is Sypilus. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1858, offers a unique perspective into the past, capturing the essence of a transformative moment in the history of transportation in the Ottoman Empire.
