EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous solar eruption that occurred on June 10,1973. Created by NASA and obtained through the Skylab 2 mission, this spectroheliogram showcases the sheer power and beauty of a solar flare. Solar flares are enormous explosions on the Sun that release an immense amount of energy, light, and high-speed particles into space. In this image, we witness the vibrant colors of our universe as gas from the Sun's surface is propelled outward in a mesmerizing display. The intense heat radiating from this celestial event creates a stunning red hue against the backdrop of deep space. It serves as a reminder of both the awe-inspiring nature of our galaxy and humanity's relentless pursuit to explore it. As we delve into astronomy in the 20th century, photographs like these become invaluable pieces of scientific heritage. They allow us to study and understand our solar system better while igniting curiosity about what lies beyond. This particular photograph was taken during Skylab 2's mission aboard America's first space station – Skylab. Let this image transport you back to the seventies when space exploration was at its peak, with NASA leading mankind towards new frontiers.
