St. Benets Abbey, 1844. Creator: Unknown

St. Benets Abbey, 1844. Ruins of a medieval monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict, on the River Bure within the Broads in Norfolk. It...appears at a very early period to have borne a high degree of importance as an ecclesiastical foundation, and to have assumed a very belligerent aspect as a fortified place. Founded by royalty (in the reign of Canute), we find it assuming the defensive, and stoutly resisting a very unceremonious visit from royalty, in the reign of [William] the Conqueror...All that now remains of this once magnificent edifice is the gateway, shown above, upon the walls of which a draining-mill has been erected. The ground-plan of the building and its appurtenances may, however, still be traced, and a melancholy contrast drawn, by the help of imagination, between its past grandeur and its present desolation. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the haunting beauty of St. Benets Abbey, a medieval monastery located on the serene banks of the River Bure within Norfolk's picturesque Broads. Despite its current state as ruins, this image transports us back to 1844 when it still stood as a magnificent edifice. Founded in the reign of Canute by royalty, this abbey held great significance as an ecclesiastical foundation. Over time, it also became fortified and fiercely defended itself against an unceremonious visit from another monarch - William the Conqueror. The only remaining structure is captured in this photograph - the grand gateway upon which a draining-mill has been erected. However, with imagination's aid, one can trace the ground-plan of the entire building and envision its former glory contrasting with its present desolation. Originally published in "Illustrated London News" during Victorian times, this engraving provides a glimpse into history through its intricate details. The image evokes feelings of nostalgia for a bygone era when Christianity thrived within these walls and religious devotion echoed throughout. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded that even though time may have eroded physical structures like St. Benets Abbey, their stories continue to captivate our imaginations and connect us to our rich cultural heritage.
