EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative reconstruction drawing by renowned artist Judith Dobie brings to life the image of King Harold II, also known as Harold Godwinson, in the pivotal year of 1066. Harold is depicted here in the prime of his reign, standing resolute and determined against the backdrop of Battle Abbey in Sussex, the site where the fateful Battle of Hastings took place. Harold's rule marked the end of the Anglo-Saxon monarchy in England, as he faced the formidable challenge of William, Duke of Normandy, who invaded England with an enormous army. The Battle of Hastings, fought on October 14, 1066, is one of the most famous battles in English history, with Harold's defeat signaling the beginning of the Norman Conquest. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Harold led his troops valiantly, reportedly encouraging them with the words, "Stand fast, my good men, I am your king!" The image of Harold with his shield raised, sword in hand, embodies the spirit of defiance and determination that characterized his reign and his final stand. The intricate details in this drawing, from the folds of Harold's cloak to the texture of his beard, bring a sense of authenticity to this historical moment. Judith Dobie's masterful use of shading and perspective adds depth and dimension to the scene, making it a captivating and moving representation of a pivotal moment in English history.
