EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the monumental construction of the M6 Motorway as it snakes through the breathtaking Lune Gorge in Cumbria. The image showcases two determined men perched on a truck-mounted hydraulic lifting platform, tirelessly working against a formidable rock face to the south of Low Borrowbridge. The arduous task of building this section of the M6 Motorway between Killington and Tebay was entrusted to John Laing Construction Ltd. , who commenced their work in October 1967. Over three years later, in October 1970, this remarkable feat of engineering was finally opened to traffic, forever transforming transportation in the region. To ensure stability along this rugged terrain, skilled workers drilled into the imposing cliffs before expertly blasting them apart. The resulting fragments were then securely fastened with rock bolts, guaranteeing safety for all those who would traverse this new road. This evocative photograph is a testament to both human ingenuity and determination as well as an appreciation for nature's grandeur. It serves as a reminder that progress can coexist harmoniously with our natural surroundings when executed with care and precision. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this snapshot from history invites us to reflect upon not only how far we have come but also on the tireless efforts that went into constructing such vital infrastructure for generations to come.
