Assembling steel frame JLP01_11_63516_05
Stakis London Metropole Hotel, Edgware Road, City of Westminster, Greater London. A view from the base of a large crane during the construction of the steel frame of the extension to the Stakis Metropole Hotel, London.
Six plate girders weigh 82 tonnes each and span 26 metres to form the ceiling of the upper ballroom and provide support for 363 bedrooms on nine floors above. The size of the crane required to lift the girders into place meant road closures were needed. Laing liaised with a number of agencies including the Traffic and Abnormal Loads Police and the Paddington Basin Construction Impact Team and the installation proceeded with minimal disruption to traffic

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the construction of the Stakis London Metropole Hotel extension, located on Edgware Road in the City of Westminster, Greater London. The image offers a unique perspective from the base of a towering crane as it assembles the steel frame that will shape this architectural masterpiece. The sheer magnitude of this project becomes evident when considering that six plate girders, each weighing an astonishing 82 tonnes, are being lifted into place. These girders span an impressive 26 meters and will form the ceiling of the upper ballroom while providing essential support for 363 bedrooms spread across nine floors above. Such an ambitious undertaking necessitated careful coordination with various agencies to minimize disruption to traffic. Laing, responsible for overseeing this construction marvel, collaborated closely with authorities such as Traffic and Abnormal Loads Police and Paddington Basin Construction Impact Team to ensure smooth operations. As one gazes at this vibrant scene filled with machinery and colorful steel beams reaching towards the sky, it is impossible not to appreciate both the engineering prowess required for such a feat and the visual spectacle unfolding before our eyes. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in shaping our urban landscapes.
