Crossing a canal JLP01_08_084424
STAFFORDSHIRE. A sheet pile cofferdam being constructed across a canal on the route of the Barlaston pipeline, as a narrow boat passes by.
The contract for the Barlaston gas pipeline was awarded to Laing Pipelines in January 1970. The pipeline ran for approximately 29 miles from Uffington, near Shrewsbury, to Barlaston in North Staffordshire. Along the route there were 61 crossings, including under the M6, the main electric railway from Euston to Crewe, two canals and six rivers, and a steep climb alongside the A34 dual carriageway near Barlaston. This photograph was taken beside either the Trent & Mersey Canal near Barlaston, or the Shropshire Union Canal near Market Drayton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Barlaston gas pipeline in Staffordshire during the 1970s. In this particular scene, we witness the meticulous creation of a sheet pile cofferdam across a canal, while a graceful narrow boat glides by effortlessly. The Barlaston pipeline project was entrusted to Laing Pipelines and spanned an impressive 29 miles from Uffington to Barlaston. Along its route, there were numerous challenges including navigating under major infrastructure such as the M6 motorway and the Euston-Crewe electric railway. Additionally, it required crossing two canals and six rivers, showcasing remarkable engineering expertise. The photograph beautifully showcases one of these crossings beside either the Trent & Mersey Canal near Barlaston or the Shropshire Union Canal near Market Drayton. The presence of a towering crane highlights both the scale and precision involved in constructing this vital piece of infrastructure. This image is not only visually striking but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It reminds us of our ability to overcome obstacles and adapt to our environment through innovative engineering solutions. Credit for capturing this historical moment goes to A© Historic England Archive. Their preservation efforts allow us to appreciate and reflect upon pivotal moments like these that have shaped our modern world.
