COTTONS CENTRE, TOOLEY STREET, LONDON BRIDGE CITY, SOUTHWARK, GREATER LONDON. A large open plan office filled with banks of computers in the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce at the Cottons Centre in London Bridge City.
The Cottons Centre is part of a complex of offices, flats and shops on Tooley Street in London Bridge City built by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group who redeveloped the former Hays Wharf site on the south bank of the River Thames. It consisted of two symmetrical nine storey units linked by a glass atrium and incorporated extensive leisure facilities including a swimming pool, squash courts, a gymnasium and retail units. Half of the building was fitted out by Laing under a separate management contract for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The redevelopment of this area took place over 2 1/2 years between 1985-1988 and included No.1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria and 29-33 Tooley Street. At the time, it was the biggest building contract in London and was one of the largest construction projects in the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bustling open plan office in the heart of London Bridge City. Located at the Cottons Centre on Tooley Street, this impressive complex was meticulously developed by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group. The former Hays Wharf site underwent an extensive transformation to become a hub of modernity and productivity. The image showcases rows upon rows of computer banks that fill the vast space, belonging to none other than the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. This renowned financial institution entrusted Laing with half of the building's fit-out under a separate management contract, solidifying its presence within this architectural marvel. Constructed between 1985 and 1988, this ambitious redevelopment project encompassed not only the Cottons Centre but also No. 1 London Bridge, Hays Galleria, and 29-33 Tooley Street. It stands as a testament to both London's ever-evolving skyline and England's construction prowess. Beyond its commercial significance lies an array of leisure facilities incorporated into this symmetrical nine-storey structure. From swimming pools to squash courts and retail units, it aimed to create an environment that nurtured work-life balance for those fortunate enough to call it their workplace. Through A© Historic England Archive's lens, we are transported back in time to witness one of London's largest construction projects unfold before our eyes – forever capturing a moment in history where innovation met ambition on Tooley Street.
