EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Konstantinou Dimitris, a Greek photographer active between 1858 and 1875, transports us to the enchanting Greek countryside. Taken during the years 1860-1869, this albumen photograph showcases a group of tourists leisurely strolling along the historic road that traces the Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis. As our eyes wander through the image, we are drawn to a prominent rock outcrop in the right middle ground. Little did Dimitris know at the time he captured this scene that this very spot would later reveal an extraordinary secret - it was here that the Temple of Aphrodite lay hidden beneath layers of history. It wasn't until excavations took place in 1891-1892 that its splendor was unveiled for all to see. In addition to these fascinating details, our gaze is also captivated by Salamis Island in the background. Its distinctive twin peaks known as "the Horns of Salamis" rise majestically against a clear sky, adding depth and beauty to this already picturesque landscape. Dimitris' skillful composition and use of albumen printing techniques have preserved this moment in time for us to admire today. This stunning photograph not only captures a group of curious travelers exploring ancient paths but also serves as a testament to Greece's rich cultural heritage and timeless allure.
