EDITORS COMMENTS
September 1914: A Great Improvement in Wartime Comfort - The Olva Improved Sleeping Blanket Amidst the chaos and hardships of the Western Front during the First World War, soldiers and medical personnel sought solace and comfort in the simplest of ways. Enter the Olva Improved Sleeping Blanket, an invaluable innovation that offered a significant improvement over the ordinary sleeping bag. This advertisement, published in the Illustrated London News in September 1914, showcases the Olva Improved Sleeping Blanket, a handwoven masterpiece made from the finest camelhair cloth. Manufactured by Mrs. Oliver, Elizabeth, of South Molton Street, London, this blanket was a great improvement on the traditional woolen or woollen bags used during wartime. The Olva Improved Sleeping Blanket was designed to provide unparalleled comfort and convenience for officers on active service and for use in field hospitals and on hospital ships. Its lightweight yet warm material made it an essential companion for soldiers braving the cold, damp conditions of the trenches. The textiles used in the Olva Improved Sleeping Blanket were carefully selected for their durability and insulating properties. The camelhair cloth, known for its softness and warmth, was handwoven to ensure the highest quality and consistency. The blanket's design allowed for easy folding and carrying, making it a practical choice for the rigors of wartime. As the war raged on, the Olva Improved Sleeping Blanket became an indispensable item for those on the front lines and in the medical services. Its ability to offer a modicum of comfort in the most challenging of circumstances made it a cherished possession for many. This advertisement serves as a poignant reminder of the small comforts that brought hope and respite to those who needed it most during the darkest days of the First World War.
