Plate 92: Amaurornis phoenicurus, the White-breasted Waterhen (1754-57), is a stunning representation of this elusive water bird as depicted in a painting by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere from the Loten Collection of coloured drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants. This meticulously detailed watercolour, created between 1722 and 1781, showcases the distinctive features of the White-breasted Waterhen. The bird's long, curved red rump and long, slender legs are clearly visible, as is its short, tailless body. The White-breasted Waterhen is a member of the sauropsida class, specifically the gruiformes order and the rallidae family. This Sauropsid, or reptile-descended, bird is characterized by its long, pointed beak and its ability to walk in water with ease. The White-breasted Waterhen's red breast is also evident in the painting, adding a pop of color to the otherwise muted tones of the water and surrounding foliage. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, a Belgian artist born in 1710, was a skilled naturalist artist who created numerous illustrations of birds, mammals, insects, and plants. Joan Gideon Loten, the collector of this impressive collection, amassed a vast array of natural history specimens and commissioned artists like de Bevere to document them in exquisite detail.
