EDITORS COMMENTS
Angelique Paulet, born in 1592, was a prominent French saloniste, known by the nickname Parthenie. She was a member of the Precieuses, a group of aristocratic women who were renowned for their refined manners, literary pursuits, and extravagant lifestyle. The Precieuses were famously satirized by the playwright Molière in his comedies, most notably in "The Precieuses Ridiculed" (Les Précieuses Ridicules). Angelique Paulet was a central figure in the literary and artistic circles of Paris during the 17th century. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and wit, as well as her love of poetry and music. Her salon, which was held in her home, was a gathering place for many of the leading intellectuals and artists of the day, including Jean Racine, Jean de La Fontaine, and Pierre Corneille. Despite her many accomplishments, Angelique Paulet and her fellow Precieuses were not without their critics. Molière's comedies, which poked fun at their exaggerated manners and affected speech, were popular with the public and helped to solidify the Precieuses' place in history as symbols of the excesses and follies of the French aristocracy. Despite the criticism, Angelique Paulet continued to live her life with grace and style. She died in 1651, leaving behind a legacy as a patron of the arts and a symbol of the intellectual and cultural vibrancy of 17th-century Paris. This portrait, taken from a painting by an unknown artist, captures the elegance and sophistication of Angelique Paulet, a woman who defied the conventions of her time and left an indelible mark on French history.
