EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Australian Cricket Team of 1899, a formidable squad that dominated the international cricket scene during the late 19th century. The team, dressed in their crisp white uniforms and holding their cricket equipment, is arranged in two rows. In the back row, from left to right, we find the following players: Victor Trumper, Hugh Trumble, Allan Border's great-granduncle Alan Stevenson Johns, Walter Pennington Howell, Major Reginald Wardill, Monty Noble, and Fred Spofforth Laver. In the front row, we see Joe Darling, Charlie Hill, Jack Worrall, JJ Kelly, Fred Iredale, and Eddie Jones. The Australian team of 1899 is renowned for its exceptional talent and prowess on the field. Trumper, for instance, was a prolific batsman, scoring over 10,000 runs in his career. Trumble, a right-arm fast bowler, took 1,247 wickets in his career. Johns, a versatile all-rounder, was an integral part of the team, contributing both with the bat and the ball. Howell, a left-arm orthodox spinner, was known for his accuracy and control. Wardill, a right-arm fast bowler, was a formidable opponent, while Noble, a right-handed batsman, was a consistent performer. Laver, a right-arm fast bowler, was a key figure in the team's success, taking 1,122 wickets in his career. The team's captain, Steve Greggory, is not present in this photograph, but his absence does not detract from the impressive line-up of cricketing talent. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of Australian cricket and the exceptional team that represented the country in 1899.
