EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning polychrome facsimile brings to life the intricate and complex design of the Aztec calendar, also known as the Tonalpohualli or Piedra del Sol (Sun Stone). Dated to 1479, this pre-Columbian masterpiece is a representation of the Aztecs' intricate understanding of their solar and agricultural cycles. The calendar is a fusion of two distinct calendars: the 260-day Tonalpohualli, represented by the intricate patterns and glyphs surrounding the central image, and the 365-day solar calendar, depicted by the concentric circles surrounding the central image. The central image of the sun god, Tonatiuh, is flanked by the gods of the north and south, representing the cardinal directions. The Aztecs believed that the sun god traveled across the sky in a chariot pulled by four horses, represented by the four quadrants of the calendar. The zodiac signs, each represented by an animal or mythological creature, encircle the outer edge of the calendar. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this facsimile offer a glimpse into the rich and complex culture of the Aztecs, whose civilization flourished in central Mexico from the 14th to the 16th centuries. This historical artifact is a testament to the advanced knowledge and artistic prowess of the pre-Columbian world.
