EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Pollilur, fought on the plains of Pollilur in South India on September 10, 1780, was a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Mysore Wars between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Mysore, led by Tipu Sultan, also known as the Tiger of Mysore. This full width view of the battle scene captures the chaos and intensity of the clash between the two formidable forces. Tipu Sultan, represented as Hyder Ali Tippu Sahib in this depiction, had been a formidable opponent to the British, having successfully repelled several invasions. However, his ambition to expand his kingdom and his alliance with the French during the American Revolutionary War drew the ire of the British. Col. William Baille, a seasoned British military commander, was sent to subdue Tipu Sultan and bring Mysore under British control. The Battle of Pollilur was the culmination of several skirmishes and engagements between the two sides. The scene shows Tipu Sultan's army, a formidable force of well-trained soldiers and elephants, charging towards the British lines. British soldiers, led by Col. Baille, are shown standing their ground, prepared for the onslaught. The battlefield is littered with the remnants of the previous engagements, adding to the sense of destruction and chaos. The Battle of Pollilur was a hard-fought battle, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, the British ultimately emerged victorious, dealing a significant blow to Tipu Sultan's military might. The battle marked the beginning of the end for the Kingdom of Mysore's resistance against the British, leading to the eventual annexation of the kingdom in 1799. This historical print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war and conflict in South India, and serves as a reminder of the rich and complex history of the region.
