The Bells, by Leopold Lewis, first produced at the Lyceum Theatre, London, November 1871. Pictured here is Harry Brodribb Irving (1870-1919) in the role of Mathias. He was the son of Sir Henry Irving, who was identified with the role of Mathias more than with any other. The tour of which this production was part also included The Lyons Mail and Charles The First. One distant venue was the Londesborough Theatre, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, August 1908(?). This photograph captures Harry Brodribb Irving (1870-1919) in the intense role of Mathias from Leopold Lewis's melodrama, "The Bells," first produced at the Lyceum Theatre in London in November 1871. Irving, the son of renowned actor Sir Henry Irving, made this role his own, becoming more closely identified with Mathias than any other. This production was part of a tour that also included "The Lyons Mail" and "Charles The First." Mathias, a man consumed by fear, is depicted here seated at a table, his face etched with worry and trepidation.
