This evocative photograph captures the daily struggle for survival during the First World War in the East African theatre. Taken in 1916, the image shows British soldiers of the King's African Rifles (KAR) diligently boring for water in a camp near Taveta, East Africa. The harsh, arid landscape of the region presented a significant challenge for the Allied forces, who were fighting against the German army led by General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. The absence of a reliable water supply was a major logistical issue for both sides, forcing them to constantly search for sources or drill their own wells.
