In this satirical cartoon from 1880, Sir William Vernon Harcourt, the newly appointed Home Secretary in Gladstone's Liberal government, is depicted as a distraught and unhappy man, unable to find a place on the Parliamentary Omnibus. Harcourt's election to the House of Commons had required a re-election due to a small number of lost votes, and upon his defeat in the initial election, he was forced to find a new seat. The image shows Harcourt, with his top hat in hand and a tear streaming down his face, being denied entry onto the omnibus by a no-nonsense bus conductor. The other men in the scene, including Liberal Party leaders Gladstone and Joseph Chamberlain, look on with amusement at Harcourt's plight.
