EDITORS COMMENTS
In this satirical cartoon from 1880, Sir William Vernon Harcourt, the newly appointed Home Secretary in Gladstone's Liberal government, is depicted as a distraught and unhappy man, unable to find a place on the Parliamentary Omnibus. Harcourt's election to the House of Commons had required a re-election due to a small number of lost votes, and upon his defeat in the initial election, he was forced to find a new seat. The image shows Harcourt, with his top hat in hand and a tear streaming down his face, being denied entry onto the omnibus by a no-nonsense bus conductor. The other men in the scene, including Liberal Party leaders Gladstone and Joseph Chamberlain, look on with amusement at Harcourt's plight. The cartoon, titled "Entr'acte," was created by the satirical illustrator Terry Parker and published during a time when political cartoons were a popular form of commentary and social critique. The Victorian era was known for its intricate political landscape, and this cartoon highlights the intense competition and jockeying for power that occurred within the Liberal Party. Despite the setback, Harcourt went on to have a successful political career, serving in various Cabinet positions throughout the late 1800s. The image remains a fascinating snapshot of the political climate of the time and the role of satire in shaping public opinion.
