The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was a prolonged conflict between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State. General de Wet, a brilliant military strategist and a formidable opponent, had evaded capture for over a year, leading his forces in guerrilla warfare against the British. However, after a series of relentless pursuits and engagements, Colonel Brits' forces managed to corner de Wet and his men near the Waterberg Mountains. In this image, de Wet is seen standing with his hands raised, signaling his surrender to the British forces.
