EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of joy and love in the lives of Princess Cecilie of Greece and her young family. Cecilie, born in Athens in 1911, was the elder sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the wife of Prince Georg Donatus of Hesse and by Rhine. Here, she is seen cradling her baby daughter, Princess Johanna, born in 1936, while her sons, Prince Ludwig (b. 1931) and Prince Alexander (b. 1933), playfully interact in the background. Tragically, this idyllic scene was short-lived. In 1937, just a few years after this photograph was taken, Cecilie, her husband, and their two eldest children were killed in a plane crash on their way to attend a family wedding in London. Johanna, who was adopted by her uncle and aunt, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, died of meningitis at the age of three. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring bond between a mother and her children.
