EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 33 from Louis-Isidore Duperrey's "Voyage de la Coquille" (1822-1825, Zoologie Atlas, 1826) showcases an exquisite illustration of the Greater Black Coucal, Centropus menbeki. This historic image, drawn during Duperrey's voyage to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, captures the intricate details of this intriguing bird species. The Greater Black Coucal, also known as the Ivory-billed Coucal or the Fan-tailed Coucal, is a large cuculiform bird with distinctive features. Its glossy black plumage is adorned with iridescent green and blue feathers on its wings and back. The most striking feature of this bird is its elaborate crest, which resembles a fan or a plume, and its long, hooked beak. Duperrey's illustration depicts the Greater Black Coucal perched on a branch, its crest fanned out in all its glory. The artist has meticulously captured the intricacies of the bird's feathers, from the glossy sheen of the black plumage to the iridescence of the green and blue feathers. The beak is shown open, revealing the pink interior, and the eyes are bright and expressive. Duperrey's "Voyage de la Coquille" was a significant contribution to the scientific community during the 19th century. The Zoologie Atlas, which includes this illustration of the Greater Black Coucal, was a comprehensive record of the natural history of the regions visited during the voyage. The illustrations in the atlas were produced from drawings made during the expedition and were of great value to ornithologists and naturalists of the time. Today, the Greater Black Coucal is still found in the forests of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. It is an elusive bird, preferring to remain hidden in the dense foliage, making it a fascinating subject for birdwatchers and naturalists. Duperrey's illustration remains an important historical record of this beautiful and intriguing bird species.
