EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the four eldest children of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia, taken in the late 1880s. Seated in the foreground is Princess Alexandra, the eldest child and future Queen Consort of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. To her right is her younger sister, Princess Marie, who would later become Queen of Romania. In the back row, Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the eldest son, stands with his sister, Princess Victoria Melita, who would go on to marry Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, whose marriage was a significant union between the British and Russian royal families, raised their children in the opulent Palace of Marlborough House in London. This photograph, taken around 1880, showcases the children's formal attire and their youthful innocence. The Duke and Duchess's marriage was not without controversy, as Marie's family disapproved of her union with a German prince, and the couple's different religious beliefs led to tensions. However, their children grew up to play significant roles in European royal history, including Alexandra's role as Queen Consort and Marie's role as Queen of Romania. This image, from the extensive archives of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these royal children and the complex web of European royal history. The photograph's rich detail and historical significance make it an essential addition to any collection focusing on European royalty, history, or family portraits.
