EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the ethereal beauty of The Choir at Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire, England. Dating back to circa 1900, this image is part of the Box 1 Boswell Collection Series of Abbeys. The choir, with its intricately carved arches and columns, stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural grandeur of this ancient monastery. The play of light filtering in through the lantern opening above adds a sense of mystique and otherworldliness to the scene. Rievaulx Abbey, founded in 1132, was once a thriving Cistercian monastery and one of the wealthiest in England. However, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the abbey was dissolved, and its treasures were plundered. Today, only the ruins of this once magnificent structure remain, nestled in the picturesque valley of the River Rye. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of spiritual devotion and architectural splendor. The Choir at Rievaulx Abbey, with its soaring arches and intricate stonework, stands as a reminder of the enduring power of history and the beauty of the past.
