EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately carved meerschaum cigar holder, owned by S/Sgt A Deacon of the 31st Coy Army Service Corps around 1902, showcases the elegance and craftsmanship of the early 20th century. The cigar holder, made in Vienna, is carved with three seated pug-dogs in full relief, adding a playful and whimsical touch to the functional piece. The pugs are contained within a case of moulded black leather, which not only protects the meerschaum but also adds an element of sophistication. The front of the holder bears the stamp "VIENNA - MAKE," indicating its place of origin and the high-quality craftsmanship associated with Viennese artisans. The use of meerschaum, a mineral known for its ability to absorb and retain the scent of tobacco, adds to the overall experience of using this cigar holder. This historic artifact offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the attention to detail and artistry that went into creating such items during this era.
