EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Madame Raquet, a merveilleuse, or fashionable woman of the Directory period in France (1795-99), wearing an intricately designed costume in the martyr style. The etching, handcolored by Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr., showcases Madame Raquet's elegant attire, which includes a round English hat made of beaver skin, adorned with a cavalier feather and a deep red ribbon. She wears a spencer, a type of jacket, over a low-cut dress made of satin. Her chemise, or undergarment, is cut out over the bust but tied at the neck like a cravat. The martyr style, popular during this era, was characterized by its simplicity and austerity, reminiscent of the robes worn by saints and martyrs. However, the opulence of the materials and the intricate details of the design contradict the intended simplicity, reflecting the paradox of the bourgeoisie's desire for both piety and luxury. The etchings for "Costumes of the Directory," from which this print is taken, were created by Eugene Lacoste and Draner after prints of the era. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors of the handcoloring bring the fashion of the Directory period to life, transporting us back in time to an era of elegance and extravagance.
