EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the magnificent Crown Regalia used during the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The regal display includes a collection of iconic coronation artefacts, each with its unique significance in the ceremony. At the heart of the image lies the Crown of St. Edward, a symbol of monarchical power and authority. This majestic crown, adorned with precious stones and gold, was first used in the 11th century and has been a part of every English and British coronation since. To the right, the Imperial State Crown takes centre stage. This magnificent crown, worn during the State Opening of Parliament, boasts an impressive array of 2,861 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls, and 4 rubies. The Swords of State, positioned at the bottom of the image, represent the monarch's power to uphold justice and protect the realm. The Orb, a golden sphere encrusted with precious gems, symbolizes the monarch's role as the temporal and spiritual head of the Church of England. The Sceptres, one bearing the Cross and the other the Rod, are held by the monarch during the coronation service. The Cross Sceptre represents spiritual authority, while the Rod Sceptre symbolizes temporal power. The Ampulla and Spoon, placed at the foot of the throne, are used during the anointing ceremony. The Ampulla, a silver vessel, contains the anointing oil, while the Spoon is used to apply the oil to the monarch's head. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy, providing a fascinating insight into the symbolism and significance of the Crown Regalia during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
