EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration is taken from the 'Grandes Chroniques de France,' a 14th-century manuscript chronicling the history of the French monarchy. The image depicts the pivotal Battle of Poitiers, which took place on September 19, 1356, and marked a significant victory for Edward, the Black Prince of England, over the French army led by King Jean II. The battle took place during the Hundred Years War, a long-standing conflict between England and France for the French throne. Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince, is depicted in the center of the illustration, dressed in armor and mounted on a horse, leading his English army to victory. The French army, represented by the disorganized and chaotic scene in the background, is shown in various stages of defeat. The use of vibrant colors and intricate details typical of Gothic art adds to the dynamic and engaging nature of the image. The Battle of Poitiers was a turning point in the Hundred Years War, as it resulted in the capture of King Jean II and the loss of much French territory. The victory boosted English morale and strengthened their position in the ongoing conflict. The illustration serves as a visual testament to the strategic prowess and military might of Edward of Woodstock and the English army during this period. This magnificent miniature painting is now housed in the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France, where it continues to captivate and inspire viewers with its intricate details and historical significance.
