EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored steel engraving, created by Annedouche after a drawing by Edouard Travies, showcases two endangered Old World vulture species: the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) and the Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus). The image is taken from Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon, published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. The Egyptian Vulture, with its distinctive white head and neck, and featherless, pinkish-red face, is a scavenger that inhabits the open country and rocky mountains of Europe, Africa, and Asia. Once widespread across its range, this species has experienced a dramatic decline due to habitat loss, poisoning from agricultural practices, and collisions with power lines. The Hooded Vulture, also known as the Rüppell's Griffon Vulture, is a larger species with a distinctive black 'hood' around its head and neck. It is found in the arid regions of Africa, particularly in Southern Africa. Like the Egyptian Vulture, the Hooded Vulture is a scavenger and has suffered from declining populations due to habitat loss, poisoning, and collisions with power lines. Both species are of great historical significance, as they have been depicted in various ancient cultures, including Egyptian mythology and Greek literature. Ornithology, the scientific study of birds, has played a crucial role in understanding these magnificent creatures and their importance in ecosystems. This beautiful engraving not only serves as a testament to their past glory but also highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these endangered vultures and preserve biodiversity.
