Elsie Janis working on the land, WWI

American actress, Elsie Janis posing for a picture looking very fetching in a land workers outfit during the First World War. Elsie Janis (March 16, 1889 February 26, 1956) was an American singer, songwriter, actress, and screenwriter. Entertaining the troops during World War I immortalized her as " the sweetheart of the AEF" (American Expeditionary Force). The photograph bears a striking resemblance to picture number 10472401 - a drawing of a land girl on a postcard by amateur soldier artist George Ranstead. It seems likely that Ranstead saw and copied this photograph of Janis. Date: 1917

Born on March 16, 1889, Elsie Janis was an accomplished singer, songwriter, actress, and screenwriter. Her captivating performances during the war earned her the endearing title of "the sweetheart of the AEF" (American Expeditionary Force).
