EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature, created by the Italian miniaturist Cristoforo de Predis in 1476, depicts the apocalyptic scene of The End of the World and the Last Judgment as described in the biblical text. The image portrays a desolate landscape, with all houses and villages in ruins, signifying the sixth and final time of destruction as foretold in the Stories of Saint Joachim, Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary, Jesus, the Baptist, and the End of the World, written by Galeazzo Maria Sforza. The Catholic faith, deeply rooted in Europe during the 15th century, held a strong belief in the impending end of the world and the Last Judgment. This devotional image serves as a powerful reminder of the transience of worldly possessions and the ultimate importance of spiritual salvation. The intricate details of the miniature, including the various figures of saints and Christ in judgment, convey a sense of awe and reverence, making it a significant work of art from the biblical codices of the time.
