EDITORS COMMENTS
Aksum, Ethiopia: A Journey Through Time and History - The Obelisks of Aksum The ancient city of Aksum, located in the northernmost part of Ethiopia, is a place where history comes alive through its awe-inspiring ruins. Established around 1000 BC, Aksum was once the capital city of the ancient Aksumite Empire, which flourished from the 1st to the 13th centuries AD. This historical city, steeped in mystery and intrigue, is renowned for its remarkable collection of obelisks, monolithic structures that stand as testament to the ingenuity and architectural prowess of the Aksumites. In this evocative image, we are transported back in time to the 19th century, as we gaze upon the obelisks of Aksum, as they stood then, under the clear blue sky. The largest obelisk, known as the 'Egyptian Obelisk,' dates back to 1856 AD and stands an impressive 32 meters tall. It is believed to have been erected during the reign of Emperor Ezana, who converted Ethiopia to Christianity in the 4th century AD. The obelisks of Aksum are not only historical landmarks but also a source of national pride for the Ethiopian people. They are a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has shaped the region and continue to inspire awe and wonder in visitors from around the world. As we delve deeper into the history of Aksum, we discover a civilization that was not only advanced in its architectural achievements but also in its trade networks, which stretched from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. The city was a melting pot of diverse cultures and influences, which contributed to the unique and vibrant Ethiopian identity that exists today. In this photograph, we are invited to explore the ancient city of Aksum, to learn from its history, and to marvel at the enduring legacy of the obelisks that stand as silent sentinels, guarding the secrets of a bygone era.
