EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Eurasian Treecreeper, Certhia familiaris, a small, curious bird native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia. The Treecreeper is a member of the woodpecker family, but unlike its larger relatives, it does not hammer on tree trunks to find food. Instead, it climbs up the bark of trees using its strong, curved beak as a hook, and pecks at insects and other invertebrates hidden in the crevices. The illustration, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time. The engraving was created by J.G. Pretre, a French naturalist and artist, and engraved by Boure, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The intricate stipple technique used in the engraving allows for a remarkable level of texture and depth, bringing out the intricate feather patterns and subtle coloration of the Eurasian Treecreeper. The accompanying text in the dictionary describes the Treecreeper's physical characteristics, habitat, and behavior in great detail, reflecting the extensive knowledge of natural history that was being amassed during this period. The Treecreeper's close relative, the Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper, Dendrocolaptes certhia, is also depicted in the same volume, highlighting the global reach of natural history exploration during the 19th century. This beautiful engraving is not only a work of art, but also a valuable record of the natural world, capturing the essence of a fascinating species and providing insights into the scientific discoveries of the past.
