EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph showcases three extinct and fossilized marine mollusks: Ostraea longirostris, Pecten Jacobaeus, and Dreissena Brardii. The image is taken from Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann. Dr. Schmidt's Book of Petrification was a groundbreaking publication that introduced fossils and palaeontology to both specialists and the general public. The central oyster in this illustration is identified as Ostraea longirostris. This extinct species is characterized by its elongated siphon, or "beak," giving it a distinctive appearance. The second mollusk depicted is Pecten Jacobaeus, a fossil scallop with a beautifully patterned shell. Lastly, the mussel Dreissena Brardii is shown, which, unlike the other two species, is not extinct but rather a modern-day fossil found in freshwater deposits. The intricate details of these fossils are brought to life through the handcoloring process, adding a vibrant and lifelike quality to the otherwise static image. The meticulous attention to detail in this lithograph reflects the passion and dedication of Dr. Schmidt and his contemporaries in the field of palaeontology. This historical piece not only serves as a testament to the rich diversity of life that has existed on our planet but also highlights the importance of documenting and preserving our natural history for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
